Then practice, listen, practice some more, watch YouTube vids from credible sources (eg mix with the masters/puremix/Slate - not the ones made by guys barely out of the beginner stages themselves!), practice etc.

In your situation, I'd be tempted to invest in a decent enough condenser mic for vocals and acoustic - something in the range of the Aston Spirit or Origin, plus perhaps a vocal "halo" to improve the recordings. I'm not sure how becoming an "intermediate musician" will find you the money to invest in high end recording gear, but even if you could right now it'd be a waste of money. A worthy target to aim for, that's for sure, but for a self-confessed beginner musician and engineer you're standing at the bottom of the mountain. Radiohead records were made in some of the UK's best studios, by some of the best producers and minds in the business - and with Nigel Godrich at the helm, still are. If you're struggling to get a good sound out of a Duet, funny as it sounds to say on a site called Gearslutz, but throwing money at the problem won't help.

Most high end studios couldn't justify it (Australia's biggest room, 301, went for Symphony II interfaces for their pro tools systems. The JCF Latte is an ultra high end converter/pro tools interface that is also in the stratosphere as far as pricing goes. I have a great "recreation" made by former Neumann employee Gunter Wagner (who now lives in Sydney), and even that was $10k. Any ideas? An original U47 is $20k+ in Australia - if you can even find a good one. Hard to try out a bunch of gear in the smaller areas. Living in Brisbane, QLD, Australia at the moment.

I'm most interested in the Neve 1073, Trident/MTA 980 series, Neumann U47, JCF Latte and a few other bits of equipment that I've been reading about or heard samples of but I'm still not sure how to approach this. I just want to be able to express the sounds that I have in my mind for this EP I'm working on. If it's expensive with two inputs no MIDI and the size of a truck I don't really care. No real limitations on budget/inputs/outputs/MIDI/mobility. Maybe if I progress from a beginner to intermediate musician it will enable me to accumulate some money and/or connections so I can try a bunch of different gear and see what works But still with heaps of silky high end when it's needed. I definitely need access to something with a bit more vibe. The Apogee Duet 2 was a bit brittle/sterile/lifeless on almost everything I've listened to it on except the Genelec 8431 but I'm pretty sure almost anything would sound good on them.
